The Cardinals were founded by Chris O’Brien on February 17, 1898 as an amateur team in Chicago. They were called Racine Normals until 1901 when they became known as the Racine Cardinals and then officially changed their name to the Chicago Cardinals in 1922. In 1959, they moved from Chicago to St. Louis where they became known as the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1988, they moved from St. Louis back to Phoenix where they became known as the Phoenix Cardinals before changing their name back to Arizona in 1994 after relocating within Arizona for training camp for that season and permanently moving there.
