William Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi. He was the first of four sons of Murry and Maud Butler Falkner. When he was four years old, his father died of heart disease and his mother became mentally unstable. His grandmother raised him and his brothers until her death in 1908 when he was eleven years old. In 1910, Faulkner’s mother married the Reverend Mr. Murry Cuthbert who helped raise them as well as their three half-siblings from Mrs. Falkner’s second marriage to Charles Taylor Swinney (Faulkner had six siblings total).
